Amex SAS Elite Insurance Requirements: Bonus Ticket Qualify?

Hi, I am travelling to Thailand this week with tickets issues with EB points, and I was wondering if I will get the coverage from my Amex Elite insurance. It says the trip must be paid with the card for the insurance to be valid. The tickets were paid with points, but the 1500kr of aiport fees/taxes required were paid fully with the Amex card. Just wondering if I should pay for extra insurance or not!

Thanks for the advice!

With Elite, the conditions explicitly state that 75% of the trip must be payed with the card OR with Eurobonus points, so you should be fully covered.

Some hotels where I am staying did not take Amex as payment method and I had to use Master Card. Does that make me ineligible for the insurance?

Ok interesting. I wonder how they check for this. Will they ask for every hotel that I have stayed during my trip and then check if they accept Amex or not? What if I just say I stayed with friends or something like that?

I've heard the same rule, but others have heard that doesn't work and the 75% applies to everywhere.

I did however get a claim through with what davvelavve said earlier this year.

Did they ask for proof of payment for every hotel you stayed during your trip?

No, that’s not true. The 75% of the trip costs is exactly what it sounds like. The whole trip, not just what you can pay with Amex. The requirement is at 75% because there are always instances where you can’t pay with Amex like a taxi etc.

There’s probably a little leniency, but the terms are very clear on this.

Yeah this is really upsetting to be honest. Travelling to Thailand and Amex is not really common there so hotels don't even accept it...

The major chains (Hilton, Accor etc.) will almost universally accept Amex. For smaller hotels, I have found that I could almost always pay with Amex when booking via Hotels.com.

Of course this will vary depending on specific location and budget, but for me I've found that paying for hotels with Amex is not generally a problem in Thailand.

I checked with AXA today and their answer was that you could withdraw cash with your Amex and pay with them. Then you are considered to have payed with Amex. But that is really expensive.

Next trip will be with my Mastercard, that is accepted everywhere as far as cards go.

Or Agoda (which has great coverage in ASEAN).
