Does anyone have experience with marking the purpose of travel as "business"? What should I expect in terms of questioning?

I'll be attending a conference related to my work, however I am not representing my employer or being sponsored by them. I'm attending out of personal interest (on a new passport and ESTA as well).

I have marked business when I went for a conference. They asked me what event I was going to and done.

I do that every time I travel for my work. It's the same type of questions I get "what is the purpose of your visit", then I reply "I am on a business trip". And then they typically ask what business that is, who I work for and that is it. I am a manager of multinational teams where a part of my teams plus a number of my peers and my boss is based in America so my purpose is to meet with those. This has never been questioned in any great detail and I'd say 15+ entries over the past 6 years.

I say you shoul always declare a trip as for business if going to a conference.

Last year I went for a conference where conference fee was sponsored but I paid travel&lodging myself. I got a rather long interview, and after declaring business, I was asked detailed question about the conference, the company behind it, my employment and if I was going to be a speaker at the conference.

Do note that you are not allowed to work when arriving on visa waiver & esta, so if you have any official function at the conference I suggest you look into visa regulations.

Thanks everyone data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

I attended the same conference last year under the same conditions, but I didn't use the MPC app and I have no clue what conditions they admitted me under since you don't get stamps anymore. The only response I gave the immigration officer back then was "attending a conference" and that's it.

I think it's an irrational fear of providing the wrong information upfront and getting in trouble for that haha – but your replies here are reassuring! data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
